Swallowsong crouched, blue eyes trained on the starling in front of her, tail-tip flicking in the air. She picked up a paw, delicately moving it forward and placing it without a sound onto the leafy forest floor, slowly shifting her weight. The bird pecked closer, and the LightningClan deputy willed it on. One more step, and she'd have it. Her hind legs snapping against the earth, Swallowsong launched herself into the air above the starling, who, in panic, flapped its wings in a desperate attempt to get away, but the grey-and-white she-cat was waiting. She clutched her prize between her jaws, deftly snapping it's neck and dragging it to the roots of a nearby cedar to bury it. It'll feed the elders well. The deputy thought, pleased at the weight of her prey. "Nice catch." A voice rumbled from behind, and Swallowsong whirled around, taken by surprise.

Phoenixstar They told me I'd never make it They were wrong But now they're gone I'd give it all up to have them back The orange she~cat limped forward to her deputy. She saw Swallowsong's surprise in the she~cat's blue eyes. "Just because my leg is injured doesn't mean I can't move silently." She told the grey cat nodding to her twisted leg, the cause of her limp. "And that is a good catch. The elders will appreciate it. Especially with Leaffall coming." As if to prove her point the a cold breeze blew by ruffling the two she~cats' fur. "Wish I could catch birds, they always get away and my leg isn't strong enough to push me into the air to catch them. I remember learning how to catch them as an apprentice. It was amazing, it felt like flying when I leaped off the ground." She sighed, "Well, there's no point in wishing for what we can't have."[/blockquote]

The surprise melted away, and Swallowsong dipped her head towards her leader. "Thank you." She purred, happy to receive a praise from Phoenixstar. The grey-and-white she-cat nodded in response to her leader's words, remembering the orange cat's story of her fight with a badger. Respect warmed the deputy's heart again, like it did the first time she'd heard that tale. Swallowsong counted herself as extremely lucky, with nothing to worry her except clan matters - those were quite enough, but at least she had no personal problems, nothing too great to dwell upon from the past. As Swallowsong watched Phoenixstar while she talked, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of awkwardness at being bigger than someone. The two made an interesting pair, both she-cats whom apprentices often outgrew. Shrugging inwardly, the she-cat turned to bury her prey.

Phoenixstar They told me I'd never make it They were wrong But now they're gone I'd give it all up to have them back "Thank you." Phoenixstar nodded to her deputy in response. She watched as the bigger she~cat turned to bury the starling and pricked her ears to listen for the rustling of prey in the grass. She heard the scuffling of a vole and flicked her tail for Swallowsong to stay quiet. Pressing herself down to the ground the small leader slunk forward, her injured leg sticking out awkwardly. Suddenly she shot forward. The vole squealed in shock but she was to fast for it. She killed it quickly with one swift bite and dropped it to the ground standing back up again. She met her deputies blue eyes with her own marble like ones. "I'm very lucky to have you as my deputy Swallowsong." She meowed softly, "Not many cats would be willing to work under a cat like me. I know that many of our clanmates believe that I shouldn't be leader. They think Oaktail should be." She was referring to her former apprentice the young warrior who, when Fadedeyes, the deputy before Phoenixstar, had died, most cats had wanted to become deputy. She knew that many cats were angry at having a cripple cat as their leader, though Oaktail was not one of them. And to make matters worse some of the cats were angry that when she had become leader she hadn't made Oaktail her deputy. She knew some of them said that she knew Oaktail would be a better leader, and that she was afraid that he would try and challenge her authority if he became deputy. "You are not like other cats."[/blockquote]

Starpaw froze at a rustle in the bushes. A squirrel came bounding out, and the small black apprentice leaped on the unaware rodent. "Gotcha." The apprentice gathered up the huge squirrel in her jaws, and padded off into the forest. Her ears pricked up when voices were heard. She shrugged. Phoenixstar and Swallowsong. She smiled, and went to show her leader and deputy her catch.

Swallowsong felt her ears heat up, considerably embarrassed by this open praise from her leader. She wasn't sure how to reply. "It's true, Oaktail would have made a great leader." She meowed after a moment of hesitation. "But he couldn't have been any better than you." A pause of silence followed Swallowsong's words, but a rustling of bushes made both she-cats' heads turn.

Phoenixstar They told me I'd never make it They were wrong But now they're gone I'd give it all up to have them back Phoenixstar turned and watched the bushes rustle, taking in a quick breath she meowed softly, "Hello Starpaw," Moments later the apprentice came into view with a large squirrel in her jaws. "That is a very good catch, the clan will be well fed tonight." She nodded to the apprentice and deputy, "I really must go, I wanted to check out the Leafclan border, make sure everything is alright there. Good hunting," She picked up the vole she had caught and with a flick of her orange tail vanished into the bushes.[/blockquote]

Swallowsong watched her leader go, dipping her head in acknowledgment as Phoenixstar passed. After the bushes where her tail disappeared stopped quivering, the grey-and-white she-cat turned back to her prey, giving the dirt a few pats and turning to face Starpaw. "Nice catch." she meowed, half absent-minded-ly. "Do you want to hunt with me, or continue on your own?" the deputy asked, stopping herself from silently padding into the trees. "I wouldn't mind either way."
